Gas energy, power grids and small nuclear power

Gas energy, power grids and small nuclear power
  • GE Vernova is implementing two projects to evacuate power from offshore wind farms onto land. The first is for the Baltic Power project, and the second is for Baltica 2.
  • The Group is also implementing a project for the deep modernization of the Porąbka-Żar pumped-storage power plant belonging to the PGE Group.
  • The company is also working on SMRs. In this regard, it is collaborating with Orlen Synthos Green Energy. Sławomir Żygowski assures that Poland will be the second country to install the BWRX-300 small nuclear reactor.
  • The topics of gas energy and energy networks will be discussed during the Energy Days conference , which will be held in Katowice on October 1-2.

"We've been operating under the new GE Vernova brand for over a year, but our Polish operations under the General Electric banner date back to the early 1990s. Our Polish facilities include a turbine factory in Elbląg, a generator factory in Wrocław, and an engineering center in Warsaw, which prepares and designs solutions for the company's global projects. We also have design, implementation, commercial, and support teams. In total, GE Vernova employs nearly 2,000 people in Poland," Sławomir Żygowski, President of GE Vernova in Poland, told WNP.

Construction of the gas unit at the Ostrołęka Power Plant is 85% advanced.

In May 2025, GE Vernova opened a new office in Katowice, which will serve as an engineering center supporting grid modernization, renewable energy integration, and energy storage projects in Poland, the Baltic States, and Eastern Europe.

"We haven't determined the target number of employees yet. It all depends on what happens in the market," replies Sławomir Żygowski.

GE Vernova is implementing several significant projects in Poland . In 2024, two gas-fired units were commissioned at PGE's Dolna Odra Power Plant, each with a capacity of 670 MW.

Currently, based on GE Vernova technology, a 745 MW gas-fired unit is being built at the Ostrołęka Power Plant for the Energa Group, where a GE Vernova turbine, generator, and heat recovery boiler, among other things, will be installed.

"This project is approximately 85% complete. We are working with our client and our subcontractors to ensure construction runs smoothly," assures Sławomir Żygowski.

The Group is also implementing two projects to evacuate power from offshore wind farms onto land. The first is for the Baltic Power farm (an investment by Orlen and Northland Power), and the second is for the Baltica 2 project (an investment by PGE and Orsted).

GE Vernova is ready to support the energy transition in other sectors as well.

" In Poland, a large portion of electricity generation still comes from coal , but we see the government's determination to transform the energy sector. Approximately a quarter of the electricity produced in Poland is generated using GE Vernova equipment. We have significant experience in this industry and are ready to continue supporting the decarbonization of European economies," adds Sławomir Żygowski.

In the coming years, GE Vernova wants to focus in Poland, among others, on gas projects.

" We have a full range of technologies in our portfolio, not just gas . We are also actively involved in the grid sector. We are implementing a very interesting project involving the deep modernization of the Porąbka-Żar pumped-storage power plant for PGE. We are heavily involved in grid projects. We are also working intensively on SMRs. In this regard, we are collaborating with Orlen Synthos Green Energy and hope that Poland will be the second country to host our BWRX-300 small nuclear reactor. We are observing and drawing conclusions from the development of the Canadian project we are implementing for Ontario Power Generation. The first reactors in Poland are scheduled to be built in the early 2030s," says Sławomir Żygowski.
