Consumption: Will white wine overtake red wine?

Consumption: Will white wine overtake red wine?

Reading time: 1 min - video: 2 min

At aperitif time, red wine struggles to find its place on terraces. The French today consume more white wine than red wine, especially among younger generations.

White wine is holding its own in a wine market that isn't doing very well, to the point of shaking up traditional red wine . Total sales fell by 4.2% year-on-year, which represents around 35 million fewer bottles. The French are consuming less alcohol overall, but also differently, particularly the younger generations who have a marked preference for white wine.

" With the diet of nibbling and having aperitifs rather than dinners, a Crémant de Bordeaux or a rosé works better than a tannic and woody red. [...] The younger generations are not getting into wine through these products ," explains Christophe Chateau of the Bordeaux Wine Council. Winemakers are therefore adapting to demand, like winemaker Stéphane Gabard, while white wine now represents nearly a third of his production, compared to only 10% five years ago.
