Germany: Retirees to work to address the pension deficit

“It's a little stressful, but I'm happy to be here,” says Pete Maie, a 70-year-old retired soldier, before a job interview for a part-time position in Germany. Keeping seniors in the labor force longer is a priority for the government, which is grappling with the growing deficit of the pension system in an aging country. Contributions are insufficient to cover the pensions of retirees, who represent a quarter of the population and received €408 billion last year.
