SZ podcast “On the Point”: New government: There is no money for major solutions

There are five parties in the new Bundestag: CDU/CSU, AfD, SPD , Greens and the Left. The FDP clearly failed, the BSW only just managed to reach the five percent hurdle.

When looking at the distribution of seats in parliament, two things quickly become clear: firstly, a coalition between the CDU/CSU and SPD is the only realistic option for a government. However, the SPD would probably have to enter a new government directly despite the bitter election defeat. And secondly, the centrist parties - CDU/CSU, SPD and Greens - do not have a two-thirds majority. The result: changes to the constitution and special funds are no longer possible from the middle of parliament. So if a new government wants to solve the defense question or the economic crisis with special funds, it needs not only the votes of the Greens, but also from the Left or the AfD.

Stefan Kornelius, head of the SZ political department, explains in this episode which problems arise from the new circumstances.
