Berlin's Social Senator finds citizen's income debate "dangerous"

Berlin – Berlin's Social Affairs Senator Cansel Kiziltepe (SPD) accuses Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) of harboring "social dynamite" in the debate he initiated about changes to the social system. "I consider the debate fueled by Friedrich Merz to be very dangerous," she told the "Tagesspiegel" newspaper, referring to the Chancellor's statements that Germany can no longer afford the current system. "This is social dynamite because, in my view, it is incomprehensible that we have a lot of money for some areas, but social benefits are to be cut," Kiziltepe said. It is incomprehensible to spend a lot of money on defense while simultaneously cutting social benefits. Politicians must maintain a balance between the two. "Mr. Merz should not kick downwards, but also look upwards," said the SPD politician. The federal government must generate new revenue and, for example, close loopholes in inheritance tax law. This could generate up to 20 billion euros in revenue, Kiziltepe said.
