While expensive gas grills boomed during the coronavirus pandemic, the trend is now shifting toward cheaper, disposable options. Is Germany's favorite summer hobby in crisis?

Anyone strolling through the parks and suburbs of this republic on a summer day will be reminded that one thing is as much a part of German culture as Goethe, Hegel, and Bach: barbecuing . You can hardly walk down a suburban street without being inhaled by the scent of charcoal and grilled meat. You can hardly cross a park lawn without seeing crowds of people gossiping and laughing around a grill. And the chances aren't bad that you'll even get to enjoy some grilled food yourself: According to a survey by the market research firm Pospulse, a third of Germans fire up a grill at least once a week in 2021.
