Full list of stores closing in September including Poundland and River Island

High street brands including Poundland, River Island and M&S are set to close stores across the UK this month.

The Centre for Retail Research predicts 17,349 shops could shut in 2025 with the loss of around 201,953 retail job losses. Rising energy bills, increased rents, and higher National Insurance contributions are putting pressure are largely to blame for more struggling retailers.

Online shopping is also contributing to reduced foot traffic in town centres. Here are all the major retailers that are closing stores in September 2025.

Poundland has been closing dozens of stores up and down the country after being purchased for £1 by investment firm Gordon Brothers.

The next set of closures will see its Whitby branch shut on September 3, Wealdstone will close on September 6, its Pontypool shop will shut on September 7 and its Irvine store will pull down the shutters on September 14.

The Original Factory Shop is undergoing a major restructure including store closures. The discount chain will shut its Chard store on September 7 and Market Drayton on September 20.

Other locations, including Middlewich, Blairgowrie, Heswall, Kinross, Nairn, Mexborough, and Whitchurch, will close later this year but the exact dates have not been confirmed.

Marks and Spencer will close its flagship Wolverhampton city centre store on Dudley Street on September 27. It comes as part of wider plans announced by M&S in 2022 to focus more on its food-only stores.

Bonmarché is set to close its Scarborough branch on September 14 due to the Brunswick Centre undergoing redevelopment. The retailer is actively hunting for a new local site.

New Look is set to close its Scarborough store on September 5. The Times reported earlier this year that New Look was looking to "accelerate future store closures" when leases expire following tax increases that were announced in the autumn Budget.

GAME is closing its Gateshead store on September 7, its Bristol branch on September 25 and its Chatham site in Kent before the end of the month. The gaming retailer is undergoing a major restructuring.

Hobbycraft has announced the closure of six stores in September including Stafford, Wigan, Maidenhead, King's Lynn, Chichester, and Crayford. This also comes as part of wider restructuring plan to cut costs.

River Island has announced that it will close its Edinburgh store on September 5. The fashion retailer has also announced plans to close another 33 shops and these will shut in January 2026.
