Video shows arrival of Jota and brother's bodies?

The death of Portuguese international football player Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva last Thursday has led to numerous posts on social media, some of which are fake. This is the case of this video in which a transport van arrives and several people are waiting on the side of the road, some kneeling.

The shared image reads: “The arrival of Jota’s body after the car accident.” The video shows countless people in silence, some of them on their knees, next to a road where a convoy of cars passes by. It is also possible to see a group of priests waiting for the urns transported by the van for a celebration.

There are several elements in the video that allow us to see that this is not the situation referred to, starting precisely with the group of priests wearing vestments typical of the Eastern Orthodox Church and not of the Catholic Church, the religious confession in which the funeral ceremonies of the two football players were celebrated this Saturday, in Gondomar.

Furthermore, the cars in the column do not have Portuguese license plates and some carry Ukrainian flags. It is also possible to see that the ballot box inside the van is also covered by a Ukrainian flag.

In a Google search for these images, Observador concluded that it is a video recorded last June, in the city of Sokal, in Ukraine, during the funeral ceremonies of a soldier. The description of the video, posted on the Sokal community page on Facebook , says that it is about the arrival at the Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, in Sokal, of the body of a “hero killed” in the war in Ukraine.

The funeral ceremonies of Diogo Jota and André Silva took place this Friday and Saturday, in the city of Gondomar. After the wakes on Friday, the funerals of the two football players who died in a car accident in Spain took place this Saturday at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar and at the city's cemetery.

Conclusion

The video circulating as being of the arrival of the bodies of Diogo Jota and André Silva, after the car accident in which they died in Spain, was recorded at the end of June in Ukraine. It concerns the funeral ceremony of a man who died in the war that has been taking place in the country since February 2022.
