The European Commission proposes nearly €6,000 million in defense loans to Portugal.

The European Commission is proposing nearly €6 billion in defense loans to Portugal, according to information released today, out of a total of €150 billion.
According to the proposal made available, the EU executive wants to allocate a total of €5.841 billion to Portugal in loans to invest in and strengthen the defense sector.
The amount is part of the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) program, which allocates 150 billion euros in loans to countries in the European political-economic bloc.
The initiative was adopted by the Council of the European Union on May 27, 2025, and Poland is by far the country that will receive the largest share, almost 43 billion euros.
