Southern and Southeastern states stand out in tax returns for the well-being of the population

The Brazilian Institute of Planning and Taxation (IBPT) has released the third edition of the Return to Society's Well-Being Index (Irbes), which assesses the use of taxes collected by states to promote the well-being of the population. The study uses data from 2022, the most recent available and consolidated.
The survey cross-references information on states' tax burdens with the Human Development Index (HDI)—revenue refers to state taxes and ignores constitutional federal transfers. The methodology weights the tax burden 15%, and the HDI 85%. According to the IBPT, "a high HDI, regardless of the country's tax burden, is much more representative."
The Federal District tops the ranking , as in the previous edition. São Paulo maintained its second place. Compared to the previous edition of the same index , the main advances were made by Rondônia , which rose from 26th to 18th place, and Goiás , which rose five places to 9th. Pará, on the other hand, dropped ten places, falling from 16th to 26th place.
