Nazaré Elevator closed indefinitely

The Nazaré Elevator is closed to the public indefinitely as of this Wednesday for technical evaluation of the cable transport equipment, the municipality of the Leiria district reported.
"This decision stems from the need for a national assessment of cable transport equipment, a preventive measure that aims to ensure that the elevator maintains all safe operating conditions," the municipality explains in a statement published on its website.
In recent months, according to the Nazaré Municipal Services, the equipment has been subject to inspections by competent external entities — namely the Technological Support Center for the Metalworking Industry and the Institute of Mobility and Transport (IMT) — “without any reservations being raised about its use”.
Even so, “given the technical recommendation to replace the traction cable, whose intervention was already scheduled for October, and following the guidelines of the regulatory authorities, the elevator will remain closed until new technical validation that guarantees its operation under maximum safety conditions”.
While the elevator is out of service, alternative passenger transport will be provided by bus to ensure mobility between Praia and Sítio.
