Diogo Jota's family and former colleagues are already in the chapel

Diogo Jota's family and former colleagues are already in the chapel
  • To make up for the lack of space, the church is using the speakers it has outside, so that it is possible to hear the readings and words of the Bishop of Porto.

The ceremony began after the coffins were transported to the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar by friends and family — Rúben Neves was one of those carrying Diogo Jota's urn.

  • The main church in Gondomar is too small for the number of people who are there to say their final farewells to Diogo Jota and André Silva. The funeral is now taking place in a ceremony presided over by the Bishop of Porto. Several dozen people are at the church door and many more are outside the area reserved for the players' family and friends.

  • The funeral procession heads towards the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar. After the cross, friends and family of Diogo Jota and André Silva follow and carry the players' coffins.

The ringing of the bells is joined by the applause of hundreds of people who fill all the walls and balconies that allow them to see the path to the church, where the funeral will take place.

  • White flower wreaths continue to enter the church where the funeral of the two brothers will take place in a few minutes. “Forever one of us,” read a black and white picture of Diogo Jota, which was carried inside the church. The bells now ring at 10 am.

  • Rúben Neves and João Cancelo arrive at the Capela da Resurreição for the first time, just a few hours after finishing the Club World Cup match in Orlando, USA.

The images of Al-Hilal players looking devastated during the minute's silence in memory of Diogo Jota and André Silva before the game against Fluminense went around the world. On Friday, Rúben Neves took to social media to react to the death of Jota, with whom he shared a dressing room for the national team, at Wolverhampton and at FC Porto.

Due to their connection and the effort they made to be present at the funeral, the athletes were among the most applauded so far.

  • Goalkeeper Rui Silva has also just arrived, heading towards the interior of the church.

  • The Penafiel team has now arrived at the chapel, including the captain, João Miguel. It is worth remembering that André Silva played for the northern club.

  • In the last half hour, several football figures have been arriving. This is the case of former national coach Fernando Santos, and players Fábio Cardoso, Ruben Dias and Nélson Semedo. Former players João Pinto and Toni and agent Jorge Mendes are also present.

  • João Félix, who shared the field with Diogo Jota in the National team, now enters the complex in Gondomar to pay his last respects to the player.

  • The president of Futebol Clube do Porto has now arrived at the scene. André Villas-Boas had already been with the victims' families at the wake of former players with links to the Porto club on Friday.

  • After the flood on Friday, during the wake, many people returned to the vicinity of the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar for the funeral.

For now, people remain behind the security barriers set up by the PSP — one at the back of the church (at the entrance to the chapel where the coffins are) and another in Largo João Paulo II — a car park in front of the church where the funeral will take place, presided over by Manuel Linda, bishop of Porto.

As they go around the church towards the Chapel of the Resurrection, Diogo Jota and André Silva's former teammates are applauded by those present, who try to get as close to the players as possible: there are many people on the wall and behind the fences of the São Cosme cemetery to see the athletes closer.

Ruben Dias, Nelson Semedo, Fabio Cardoso, Thiago Alcantara, Fabinho, João Moutinho and Bernardo Silva entered the chapel in the last few minutes. Roberto Martinez and Fernando Santos have also arrived.

  • There is applause as the Liverpool team arrives for the funeral of Diogo Jota and André Silva. Virgil Van Dijk carries a wreath in the shape of the club's shirt with the number 20 on it — worn by Jota when he played for the club —; another player also carries a wreath, with the number 30.

  • The player has just arrived at the location.

  • Bernardo Silva has just arrived at the chapel in Gondomar. The player and friend of Diogo Jota, who was present at the wake yesterday, now arrives with a wreath of white roses in his arms.

  • D. Manuel Linda will preside over the funeral ceremony, CNN reports.

  • The President of the Portuguese Football Federation, Pedro Proença, arrived shortly after the Minister of Sports.

  • The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Margarida Balseiro Lopes, has just arrived at the chapel in Gondomar.

  • Several football personalities are arriving at the Resurrection Chapel in Gondomar, where the funeral ceremonies will take place. Roberto Martínez, coach of the national team, is one of those who has just arrived to say goodbye to Diogo Jota and André Silva.

  • Good morning, let's follow the last day of funeral ceremonies for Diogo Jota and André Silva.

Former colleagues of the two players have been arriving at the Resurrection Chapel in Gondomar in the last few minutes, joining the family to attend the funeral, scheduled for 10 am.
