Countdown to new governor

Mário Centeno's term as head of the Bank of Portugal is about to end and, although it has not yet been made official, everything indicates that he will not be reappointed to the position. The tension between the governor of the BdP and Luís Montenegro has been visible and several names have emerged as candidates to succeed him.
It is true that the coming years may not be easy, as the future leader will have the responsibility of ensuring stability and modernization of the financial sector and the «central banks will tend to assume an even more central role in the management of systemic risks, in the face of an unstable economic climate marked by two wars, and in the preservation of financial stability», as several experts admit to Nascer do SOL.
And while uncertainty persists, there are those who argue that the desired profile for the next governor “should be based, above all, on independence and a reputation for being equidistance from political power. It is essential that this be someone with recognized technical credibility and relevant experience in the sector.”
