ANAC director says expensive airport shopping helps reduce fares

The director of the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC), Tiago Sousa Pereira , stated that airport ticket prices don't depend solely on taxes. According to Pereira, revenue generated by airport commerce "plays a significant role for the concession operator." He believes this makes it possible for "our airport fees to be the lowest in the world."
The statement was made during Regulation Week FGV, which began last Wednesday (8), in Rio de Janeiro. The airport fee is, in fact, the set of fees for boarding, connection, landing, stay, storage and movement of cargo.
ANAC estimates that commerce accounts for approximately 55% to 60% of airport revenue. Meanwhile, revenues from the government's concession to operate airport operations range from 40% to 45%.
Data shows cheaper airfare and more expensive food, according to the latest inflation survey.Data from the Broad Consumer Price Index (IPCA) shows, in fact, a 7% drop in airfare prices over the past 12 months. In contrast, food prices rose 6.6% over the same period. Among the general average, for example, is cheese bread, a common airport staple. It rose 8.1% over the past 12 months. Passengers usually accompany it with a cup of coffee. The beverage, without its final version, rose 15.4%, a rise influenced by the 38.3% increase in ground coffee.
Finally, expanding the range of other modes, we see that transportation costs have been rising steadily since July 2023. In September of that year, we saw the largest increase, with a 7.7% increase. However, since June 2025, the increase has been declining. Even so, the latest IPCA shows a 3.2% increase over the last 12 months.
