Jackpot for Elon Musk: Multi-billionaire even richer after a massive bonus of 25 billion

Musk has repeatedly threatened to leave Tesla if his shareholdings didn't increase. This stock package is intended to incentivize him to stay on board, after a judge last year struck down a previous multi-billion dollar package.

The judge ruled that the approval process for that 2018 compensation package was flawed and unfair to shareholders. Musk has appealed that ruling.

So Musk is now receiving this new block of shares. It's 96 million Tesla shares. At the current stock price of around $302, the block of shares is now worth approximately $29 billion. If the stock price rises or falls, that amount will naturally increase or decrease.

Musk does have to pay money to acquire the shares, but it's only $23.34 per share. The current stock price is more than 13 times higher.

Through the new shares, Musk will gradually acquire a larger portion of Tesla's outstanding shares. Musk currently holds 13 percent of Tesla's shares. The new shares will increase his stake to approximately 16 percent.

Tesla is primarily known as a manufacturer of electric cars, but the company is shifting its focus to self-driving taxis and robots. As a result, it is gradually becoming more of an AI and robotics company than an automotive company.

Tesla hasn't been very successful lately. It's been years since a new model was released. It did release the Cybertruck, but it hasn't been a success yet.

Furthermore, the bromance between Musk and US President Trump caused drivers to buy fewer Teslas. In the second quarter, sales fell from 444,000 to 384,000.

The development of self-driving cars hasn't been a resounding success yet. Videos of Tesla fans testing a so-called Robotaxi posted on social media revealed cars braking suddenly or requiring intervention from front-seat passengers, the New York Times recently reported .

And last week, Musk wrote on X that a Tesla drove somewhere completely independently with no passengers. But the car parked in a part of the road where it wasn't allowed, according to the New York Times.
