Republican lawmakers block Trump's tax bill that includes a remittance tax.

WASHINGTON—A group of Republican lawmakers blocked President Donald Trump's controversial tax cut plan Friday, which includes a tax on remittances.

Discussions this week in several House committees highlighted the reluctance of several Republicans to advance the bill to the floor.

Lawmakers have held several sessions to push the proposal forward and pass it before Memorial Day, May 26, and to get it to Trump's desk by July 4, Independence Day.

This Friday, during a House Budget Committee hearing, five conservative Republicans voted against the bill because, they argued, its passage would increase the budget deficit.

Chip Roy said, “We’re writing checks we can’t cash, and our kids are going to pay the price.”

He added, "This bill is profoundly insufficient; it doesn't do what we say it does regarding deficits."

The five Republicans' refusal to act was interpreted as an unusual rebellion within the Republican Party against Trump's pressure.

Regarding his proposal, Trump had asserted that "it not only cuts taxes for all Americans, but it will also remove Medicaid (health insurance) for millions of undocumented immigrants, with the intention of protecting it for those who truly need it."

Trump's bill could stall without Budget Committee approval.

The U.S. president's mega-proposal also includes a controversial 5% tax on remittances sent abroad, which drew renewed criticism from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo on Friday, calling it "an injustice" and a "discriminatory" measure that would affect Mexican migrants in the U.S.
