A U-turn on family benefits: Social Security offers up to €1,380 per minor child: age and requirements

A U-turn on family benefits: Social Security offers up to €1,380 per minor child: age and requirements

It's called the Child Support Supplement and is a benefit granted to families with children , provided they meet certain requirements. Although it can be included in the Minimum Living Income , the benefit, which was previously called the Child Support Benefit, can also be requested independently .

The amount is established based on the number of minors in the household and also their age as of January 1 of each year, according to the following ranges.

  • Children under three years old: 115 euros per month (1,380 euros per year).
  • Children over three and under six: 80.5 euros per month (966 euros per year).
  • Those over six and under 18: 57.5 euros per month (690 euros per year).

Therefore, if there is only one child under three years old , the annual payment would be 1,380 euros , and if there are two, 2,760 euros. If, for example, there is one child aged five and one aged 10, the total would be 1,656 euros (966 euros and 690 euros, respectively).

Requirements to access this aid

Once the age thresholds and eligible amounts are known, it's important to mention the requirements set by Social Security for granting this aid, which currently benefits more than 500,000 people . Several conditions are set.

  • Income below 300% of the thresholds established in the scale of increases for calculating the guaranteed income according to the type of cohabitation unit.
  • That the net worth is less than 150% of the limits set in the scale of increases for calculating the applicable net worth limit according to the type of cohabitation unit.
  • Meet the asset test, the limit for which for an adult will be 6 times the guaranteed income, with an increase scale equal to the income limit according to the type of cohabitation unit.

To facilitate the process, the National Social Security Institute (INSS) provides users with a simulator to determine whether they are entitled to receive the IMV (Minimum Living Income) and also whether they are entitled to this supplement , even if they are not eligible for the Minimum Living Income.
