Scoccimarro, exceptional intervention in via Udine in Trieste

Scoccimarro, exceptional intervention in via Udine in Trieste
1

The regional councilor for environmental protection, energy and sustainable development Fabio Scoccimarro carried out an inspection, also from the air, with technicians and engineers to verify the completion of the safety works on a stretch of about 300 meters of via Udine in Trieste, affected for years by a serious landslide. This geological phenomenon threatened the stability of the houses above and the habitability of the entire area.

“This is an extraordinary and complex intervention, made necessary by a situation that arose 150 years ago, when the area was urbanized as part of the development of the old port, without taking into account the unstable nature of the land,” Scoccimarro observed.

As the councilor reported, "the Region intervened first in collaboration with the Municipality and then directly, creating a structural work designed to guarantee the safety of the area for decades to come. The intervention required techniques typical of mountain environments, not urban ones: a helicopter even had to be used to transport the containment materials, given the logistical difficulty."

“The exceptional nature of the intervention lies in the fact that it was a complex geotechnical work in an urban area, carried out with methods normally used in mountain environments, which is why it was important to find an agreement and collaboration with the residents and condominium administrators: in fact, the use of extraordinary means, such as a helicopter, was necessary and allowed the work to be completed in just one year, making homes and the territory safe” Scoccimarro further highlighted.

The consolidation works on the rocky slope near the internal courtyard of the buildings on Via Udine in Trieste, characterized by very steep slopes and geological instability, are now in their final stages. The intervention involves a slope approximately 300 meters long and up to 30 meters high, already the subject of partial safety works in the past.

Following new geotechnical investigations promoted by the Regional Geological Service, an executive project was launched, approved in 2023, aimed at stabilizing the areas classified as “high” and “medium-high” risk. The main works involved the reinforcement of surface defenses, the installation of metal mesh reinforced with geomat and the installation of deep nails to counteract erosion and improve the resistance of the wall.

The overall economic framework of the intervention amounts to approximately 1.5 million euros. The works were entrusted to the Eurorock company and were started on March 1, 2024, with completion scheduled for May 27 of this year, after some suspensions due to weather conditions and improvement variants. The areas involved were made subject to the benefit of the Region to guarantee access and maintenance to the works carried out over time.
