Protest against Bezos, a 400 square meter banner in Venice in view of the wedding

The initiative of Greenpeace Italy and the British action group Everyone Hates Elon

'If you can rent Venice for your wedding, you can pay more tax'. This is the text of the giant 400-square-meter banner addressed to Jeff Bezos and unfurled in Piazza San Marco by activists from Greenpeace Italy and the British action group Everyone Hates Elon, in view of the billionaire's wedding that will be celebrated in a few days in the lagoon city.

"Bezos embodies an economic and social model that is leading us towards collapse. Social injustice increasingly goes hand in hand with climate injustice: on one side the arrogance of a few billionaires who have lifestyles that are devastating for the planet, on the other all the people who suffer the damage of the environmental crisis on a daily basis - says Simona Abbate of Greenpeace Italy - The super rich, the fossil fuel industries and the defense industry speculate on people's lives: taxing their enormous profits would be a first step towards the social and climate justice for which we fight every day".

A spokesperson for Everyone Hates Elon says: "While governments are talking about hard choices and struggling to fund public services, Jeff Bezos can afford to shut down half the city for days just to celebrate his wedding. A few weeks ago he spent millions of dollars on an 11-minute space flight. If there was ever a sign that billionaires like Bezos should pay wealth taxes, this is it."
