NextChem (MAIRE): €210M Contract for Low-Emission Methanol Project in Mexico

NextChem (MAIRE): €210M Contract for Low-Emission Methanol Project in Mexico
NextChem MAIRE methanol production | ESGnews

MAIRE announced that NextChem has been awarded a contract worth approximately €210 million for basic engineering and supply of proprietary critical equipment for the Pacifico Mexinol project. This ultra-low carbon methanol plant will be located in Sinaloa, Mexico , and will have a capacity of 2.1 million tonnes per year, of which 15% will meet the ISCC-EU RFNBO parameters for green fuels.

The $3.3 billion Pacifico Mexinol project is being jointly developed by Texas-based Transition Industries and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), part of the World Bank, and will be executed by a consortium of third parties.

Once operational in 2029, it will be the largest ultra-low-emissions methanol plant in the world, with an annual production of approximately 350 thousand tonnes of RFNBO (Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin) methanol and 1.8 million tonnes of low-emissions methanol from natural gas with CO2 capture.

The NX AdWinMethanol Zero technology developed by NextChem integrates its proprietary processes , including proprietary CO2 capture technologies. This solution further reduces carbon emissions to near zero by converting captured CO2 and green hydrogen into ultra-low carbon methanol qualifying as RFNBO. This innovative technological approach increases the sustainability of the methanol production process, in line with Pacifico Mexinol's commitment to addressing climate change.

Ultra-low carbon methanol supports the decarbonization of the hard-to-abate fuel and chemical sectors. Methanol produced by Pacifico Mexinol will facilitate the decarbonization of hundreds of everyday products, including fuels, plastics, paints, auto parts and building materials.

“This historic milestone, the largest contract NextChem has ever won, plays a key role in our corporate trajectory and confirms the reliability of our portfolio of sustainable technology solutions,” said Fabio Fritelli , Managing Director of NextChem. “We are honored to support this strategic initiative that promises to be a game-changer for the Mexican economy, as well as for the energy transition arena globally.”
