Fuel prices, news from today: what changes with the new excise duties

It's official: the new alignment of excise duties is in effect. The tax reform provides for it, the Official Journal confirms it.

Fuel prices: diesel up, petrol down

The decree – the work of the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Economy – aims to encourage the use of gasoline . Why? Because it pollutes a little less. A technical maneuver, but with a clear political message.

Translated into numbers: the excise duty on diesel increases by 15 euros per thousand liters. The one on gasoline decreases by the same amount. Said like that it seems little – a cent and a half more or less per liter – but in the big numbers and in the long term it can make a difference . And maybe it will.

In the meantime, however, the price market has not yet digested the news. On Thursday, May 15, the price lists did not yet reflect the excise duty update. And yet, something is already moving. According to data from Staffetta Quotidiana , some brands have adjusted their prices upwards: Q8 and Ip are going up one cent for gasoline, two for diesel. Tamoil follows. Not much, but it's there.

Fuel prices: what drivers find today

Net of fuel taxes, the numbers at the pump speak for themselves. Self-service petrol above 1.70 euro/litre. Diesel just under 1.59. And those who get serviced spend more: up to 1.84 for unleaded and 1.72 for diesel. LPG remains stable (0.722), while methane drops a little. But these are details, you might say. On the motorway, however, filling up is still expensive: almost 2 euro per litre if you go self-service.

Those who travel notice these shots. Those who drive for work also. Those who have no choice, just pay.

And now? Now we wait for the domino effect. Because when excise taxes change, the system moves slowly. But it moves. And not always in the direction that drivers hope.
