While restaurant vouchers are increasingly used in supermarkets, they will be definitively authorized and dematerialized in 2027, much to the dismay of restaurateurs.
The use of restaurant vouchers in supermarkets will soon be definitively authorized and the vouchers will be mandatory be dematerialized by 2027. Many French people use their vouchers mainly to pay for their shopping: thus, 31% of restaurant vouchers are spent in supermarkets, a clear increase over the past two years. Their use in restaurants, however, has seen a sharp decline and now represents only 39% of spending.
Due to this sharp decline in the use of meal vouchers in restaurants, many establishment owners have seen their lunchtime attendance plummet. " We've noticed that our customers are coming in less. By the middle of the month, they have almost no more meal vouchers, [...] unfortunately, they no longer come for lunch ," laments Romain Vidal, a Parisian restaurateur.
