Nestlé changes Chocapic recipe under pressure from Nutriscore

Nestlé changes Chocapic recipe under pressure from Nutriscore
Nestlé is going to change the recipe for its Chocapic, France's favorite chocolate cereal. The new Nutri-score formula threatens sales. Here's why.

Chocapic is strong in nutriscore! Nestlé, in order to avoid seeing its rating lowered too much by the new Nutri-Score criteria, will again change the recipe for its Chocapic , its famous chocolate cereal, the second best-selling brand in France behind the Trésor brand from competitor Kellogg's.

Because the Nutri-Score algorithm has changed and shuffled the deck. Previously, a bowl of Chocapic was rated A according to the old Nutri-Score algorithm. But now, breakfast is rated C. With an 11% reduction in sugar and 9% in salt starting in September, the chocolate-flavored cereal will get a B.

And if Nestlé is making such an effort, it's because the Nutri-Score works, it has an impact on sales: +6% for an A label, +4.5% for a B and up to -7% for an E.

The stakes are high, as Chocapic accounts for nearly 30% of Nestlé's sales in France and 40% of its advertising spending. The recipe has already been modified seven times in twenty years, with a "progressive" reduction of 48% in sugar, 60% in salt, and also in saturated fatty acids, as well as an increase in fiber.
