To find his love, Penelope, Ulysses crossed the Mediterranean, braving all dangers to reach the turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea. Next to Ithaca, the island of Zakynthos offers Homer's myth to lovers from all over the world. Trevor and Rachel were legally married in the United States. But it is in Greece that they come to celebrate their love. "We wanted a beach," Rachel emphasizes. "The water is magnificent, the beaches too. Greece is the ideal place for us," adds her companion.
They wanted adventure. A symbolic wedding on a secret beach that they will discover far from their family and loved ones. "We have a big family and some problems between our two families," explains the groom. In the United States, getting married without family has become a trend called elopement. "Elopement is when the couple gets married in private. Romantic couples love this kind of wedding," says wedding planner Frangiska Bourgiezi.
Frangiska Bourgiezi is the island's wedding planner. Her team is discreet and well-trained, allowing the couple to experience the adventure of a lifetime. Frangiska's young niece wanted to share in the American dream with her, so she was given a small role. Every year, more than 1,000 foreign couples come here to celebrate their wedding, whether civil or symbolic. A tourist phenomenon for the island of Zakynthos.
More stressed than on the American beach, Frangiska is preparing a large-scale ceremony. In an hour, the 70 guests of an English couple will arrive. "It's stressful for us, but it's a job that makes us happy," she assures. "It's clearly the number one tourist product on our island. Everyone is working, the hotels, the florists, the photographers, everyone on the island depends on this wedding business," continues the organizer.
"We organize between 60 and 70 weddings a year. They come from all over the world: England, France, Germany, Ireland, the United States. These couples seek exoticism on the island, and what's more, they spend much less than in their own countries, only 40 euros per guest, all inclusive," emphasizes Andreas Haraktinos, Frangiska's trusted restaurateur.
