Traveling is becoming increasingly expensive, and prices rose again in June compared to May. Package holidays and hotels saw increases of 4.4% and 3%, according to the Comparis Leisure Price Index published on Tuesday. But over the past five years, prices have skyrocketed: they have increased by 30% for package holidays and 21% for hotel stays, the online comparison site points out.

This is not a post-Covid catch-up effect, but rather a lasting phenomenon, according to Michael Kuhn, a financial expert at Comparis. The reasons: growing demand, rising energy prices, higher personnel costs, and a shortage of skilled workers. "There is a shortage of pilots, crew members, ground and service personnel, cleaning staff, cooks and drivers, as well as tour guides," he notes.

In the hotel industry, one of the main drivers of this increase has been strong seasonal demand, according to Comparis. "Over the past five years, this situation has had an impact on prices due to the shortage of capacity," it explains. This is compounded by rising wage costs, food prices, and maintenance costs.

Increased demand for package holidays also had an impact, as did staff shortages, logistics, partially limited flight capacity, and airfare prices. While these prices fell slightly in June—thanks to fierce competition for popular destinations—they have increased by 65% over the past five years, according to Comparis.

2026 isn't looking good, according to Comparis. The upward trend in hotel and package holiday prices is expected to continue. "Growing demand, combined with rising personnel costs and soaring energy costs, will likely lead to higher accommodation costs. However, competitive pressure and customer price sensitivity are expected to curb this increase," explains Michael Kuhn. Hotel prices will also influence package holiday prices: "Even though flight prices may account for a slightly smaller share of package holidays in the future, rising hotel prices and strong demand will make holidays more expensive," concludes the expert.
