Germany: At least three dead and several injured in train derailment

A train derailment in Germany on Sunday evening left at least three dead and several injured. Around 100 passengers were on board, and the cause of the accident remained unknown as of Monday, July 28.

There were more than a hundred people on board a regional train whose carriages overturned . Rescuers are still struggling in Germany to get passengers out of the vehicle, but some areas remain very difficult to access. "I remain hopeful, but we have not yet been able to fully examine what is under the overturned carriages. We cannot completely rule out the possibility that there are still people underneath," said Thomas Strobl, Interior Minister of Baden-Württemberg (Germany).
The accident occurred on Sunday, July 27, around 6 p.m., in an area of southwest Germany. Helicopters are still monitoring the tracks. The cause of this impressive derailment remains unknown for the time being. The human toll is provisional, according to the authorities, and could worsen over the hours. Following the accident, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz reacted quickly: "I am in close contact with the Minister of the Interior and the Minister of Transport. I have asked them to support the emergency services in every possible way. We mourn the victims; I express my condolences to their families," he assured in a publication on X.
Upon taking office, the Chancellor promised to invest several hundred billion euros to modernize and improve the railway infrastructure, which is suffering from dilapidation and chronic lack of maintenance.
