European Union: Apple appeals its 500 million euro fine
The American group Apple announced on Monday, July 7, that it had filed an appeal with the EU courts against the €500 million fine imposed in April by Brussels for unfair terms in its App Store. "We have filed an appeal today because we believe that the European Commission's decision – and its unprecedented fine – go well beyond what the law requires," the Californian giant explained in a statement.
"The Commission is imposing commercial terms that are confusing for developers and harmful for users," he added. On April 24, Apple was fined €500 million for unfair terms in its App Store, to the detriment of app providers and their customers.
Along with social media giant Meta, which was fined €200 million for antitrust violations on the same day, Apple is also the subject of the first sanctions imposed under the new European Digital Markets Regulation (DMA). This regulation came into force last year to put an end to abuses of dominant positions by tech giants.
Claiming to be "unfairly targeted," Apple immediately announced its intention to appeal while continuing dialogue with regulators.
Apple and Meta, like the other giant in the sector Alphabet (Google), are the subject of multiple proceedings for abuse of dominant position, both in Europe and in the United States.
