Apple appeals record fine imposed by Brussels

Apple appeals record fine imposed by Brussels

Apple announced Monday that it is appealing the €500 million fine imposed in April by the European Union . "We have filed our appeal today because we believe the European Commission's decision – and its unprecedented fine – goes far beyond what the law requires," the California-based giant said in a statement. "The Commission is imposing commercial terms that are confusing for developers and harmful for users."

On April 24, Apple was fined for abusive clauses in its AppStore app store, to the detriment of app providers and their customers. Along with social media giant Meta (Facebook), which was fined €200 million for antitrust violations on the same day, Apple is thus the first to be targeted under the new European Digital Markets Regulation (DMA). This regulation came into force last year to put an end to abuses of dominant positions by tech giants. Claiming to be "unfairly targeted," Apple immediately announced its intention to appeal while continuing its dialogue with regulators.

Apple and Meta, like the other giant in the sector Alphabet (Google), are the subject of multiple proceedings for abuse of dominant position, both in Europe and in the United States . In France, Apple has also appealed the sanction imposed on it at the end of March by the Competition Authority, which had imposed a fine of 150 million euros for abuse of dominant position. Apple had been convicted in connection with targeted advertising on its devices.

The American giant had been targeted for its use of its ATT ("App Tracking Transparency") system, presented as an additional protection for users' private data. According to the French authority, these tools , "neither necessary nor proportionate," penalized third-party publishers.
