2026 Budget: After the savings suggestions sent by Matignon, the unions are sharpening their weapons

The abolition of two public holidays and the new reform of unemployment insurance... The framework letters sent Friday evening and Saturday have caused a stir among the trade unions, who are threatening action at the start of the school year.
By Aurélie LebelleWhile the heatwave is currently causing temperatures to rise, the start of the school year promises to be a hot one socially. The framework letters—which outline the future savings avenues that will be included in the draft finance bill—were sent Friday evening and this Saturday by Matignon to employers' and union organizations. They set the objective of the negotiations that the government has asked the social partners to reopen on two issues: unemployment insurance and public holidays .
And with the unions, They are already having trouble getting through. The inter-union (CGT, FO, CFDT, CFE-CGC, CFTC) drew its guns this Saturday evening, estimating in a press release that it was at "a social and democratic turning point." Planning to meet on September 1st, the unions will examine "together the means of reacting to counter this new outburst of brutality towards society and the world of work." They could launch a strike movement while FO has already called for mobilization from September 1st and another movement - outside of the central unions - is calling for "blocking" France on September 10th.
