Toluca and América star in the Champion of Champions after 36 years

After 36 years, Toluca and América will once again face off for the Liga MX Champion of Champions title. The match will be this Sunday at Dignity Health Sports Park in California, USA.
Toluca secured its place as champion of the 2025 Clausura tournament, while América won the 2024 Apertura tournament (corresponding to the 2024-25 season). In the event of a tie after 90 minutes, the winner would be decided on penalties.
"The goal is to compete to win everything. We're built that way, knowing we have a lot of games to play, but that shouldn't slow us down," said Diablos Rojos coach Antonio Mohamed ahead of this clash.
It will be only the second time in the history of the Campeón de Campeones , which began to be played in Mexico in 1942, that Toluca and América will be the protagonists.
The only previous match was in 1989, when América defeated Toluca 2-1 at the Azteca Stadium with goals from Carlos Hermosillo and Carlos Seixas. Roberto Masciarelli scored for the State of Mexico team.
The format was different, as long tournaments were held in Mexico at the time. América won the league in the 1988-89 season, and Toluca won the cup. That's why they met in the Campeón de Campeones, which in Europe is known as the Super Cup.
Now both have the label of being the last Liga MX champions, remembering that América reached the last four finals and only lost to Toluca in the 2025 Clausura. Before that, they set a record in short tournaments with their first three-time championship (Apertura 2023, Clausura 2024, and Apertura 2024).
"We're going to be fighting for a title again, with a lot of energy, hunger, and all the strength that América has shown in recent years," said André Jardine, coach of the Águilas, ahead of this Sunday's match.
Jardine has won six titles with América since taking over in the summer of 2023. In just two years, he is already the most successful coach in the club's all-time list.
They'll be looking for one more this weekend, which would also help América become the team's sole winner of the Campón de Campeones title. So far, the capital team is tied for first place with Chivas with seven.
Toluca, for its part, has the third-most trophies with four. However, its last win was in 2006, when it defeated Pachuca in a two-legged series between Hidalgo Stadium and Nemesio Diez Stadium.
Less than two months ago, Toluca and América played another highly-rated clash in the 2025 Clausura final. The first leg ended 0-0 in Mexico City, but the second leg in the capital of the State of Mexico ended 2-0 in favor of Antonio Mohamed's team, thus breaking a 15-year Liga MX drought.
After the summer break, both teams have started the 2025 Apertura tournament on the right foot. Toluca won both of its matches (3-1 against Necaxa and 2-4 against Santos), while América drew one (1-1 against Juárez) and won the other (3-1 against Tijuana).
This match will also mark 10 years since the Liga MX Campeón de Campeones (Champion of Champions) was played in the United States. The first was at Toyota Field in Texas in 2015, with Santos winning over América.
Then come seven editions, including the 2025 edition, held at Dignity Health Sports Park in California. The trophy was not contested in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic, nor in 2022 and 2024 because Atlas and América, respectively, won it automatically for being consecutive Liga MX champions.
