40-hour workweek in Mexico: pros and cons

The reform to reduce the work week from 48 to 40 hours in Mexico has yet to be introduced in Congress because it's still in the review phase. But what do the experts say? What are its pros and cons?

To achieve the 40-hour workweek, it is necessary to do so through dialogue, stated the Secretary of Labor and Social Security of the Federal Government , Marath Baruch Bolaños, after one of the forums promoted by the Federation, which was held at the Universidad Panamericana.

The federal official stressed that The forums are to listen to proposals not only from the business sector, but also from workers. He assured that they are in the process of listening and engaging with the sectors involved to promote the new work schedule.

“It's always a good time to defend and promote workers' rights. It takes time, a gradual approach that allows us to pave the way so that, as soon as we agree, we can achieve this goal, and we will do so through dialogue.”

Reduction of working hours: pros and cons

Labor experts highlight the advantages and disadvantages of implementing the reform that seeks to reduce the work week to 40 hours in the country .

Edoardo Ruiz Buenrostro, academic at the University of Guadalajara, highlights that, For employees, there would be benefits such as having more personal time and rest, which would allow the worker to be more productive during their usual workday. .

"There will be more personal time, more rest; in a way, all the inequalities we experience in terms of commute times and work-related stress are being compensated for. And adding one more day (of rest) to the week wouldn't affect productivity."

On the other hand, the academic pointed out that The negative points he observes are that more resources will have to be allocated to salaries and compensation .

"That productivity decreases or is detrimental to your company and, because you have greater rights, you have lower profits and, therefore, your business does poorly."

However, he opined that in the case of business owners, their fear is “unfounded” to some extent, according to the academic's view .
