Robotaxis: The billion-dollar race for autonomous cars

Robotaxis: The billion-dollar race for autonomous cars

What seemed like science fiction in the days of "Back to the Future" is now part of everyday life in some cities around the world: robotaxis – autonomous vehicles that transport people from A to B. And once again, the two global powers, the USA and China, are taking the lead here.

The sometimes still poor reputation of robotaxis is likely to improve significantly with the constant advancement of technology. Automotive expert Ferdinand Dudenhöffer of the CAR Institute even expects that self-driving vehicles will lead to fewer accidents on the roads in the future, because "human error is the cause of 90 percent of all crashes."

In ten years, almost 32 percent of all individual journeys could be “completed” by robotaxis or roboshuttles.

The human factor is also the most expensive component in passenger transportation. If this can be eliminated through the use of robotaxis, operators can achieve operating margins of up to 25 percent. This also explains why Tesla and others have already invested a combined total of around $100 billion in the development of this technology and aren't tired of investing more.

According to experts, the spread and use of robotaxis is expected to increase rapidly in the coming years.

Which technology ultimately prevails will be crucial for who will come out on top in the race for the top spot in the market. According to futurologist Dr. Mario Herger, the leading provider could even become "the first $10 trillion company in history."

Shareholders have long known that this industry still has enormous growth potential. But which horse should you bet on? If you would like to gain insight into the current standings of the top five companies in the field of autonomous driving and which criteria are likely to be decisive for future market development, read Jochen Kauper's article in the current issue of DER AKTIONÄR starting on page 36.
