Since the Federal Constitutional Court approved the packaging tax, there has been a heated debate in city halls: Should paper cups, aluminum foil, and disposable containers cost extra? It's a culture war on the go.

Now he's in a pickle. Martin Horn actually wanted to prevent the new tax in his city. But the city council voted in favor. And now Freiburg's mayor has to introduce the packaging tax, whether he likes it or not, in early 2026. "This tax will make every kebab in this city more expensive," says Horn.
