Galeria: But please with Aldi

Aldi, Rewe and other supermarkets are nesting in almost every second former department store, mostly in the basement.
Before, they didn't even have a chance here. Now they're expected to play the role of savior, from the bottom up, sometimes for the entire city. Three examples.

Essen's brave new shopping world isn't finished yet . But Aldi Nord has already made a start in its hometown. One thing is clear: It won't be a walk in the park. The huge Willy-Brandt-Platz in the center seems deserted, with only a few passersby scurrying across the concrete slabs leading from the main train station to Kettwiger Straße, Essen's once famous mile of upscale consumerism. Opposite two bakeries, the renovated, sand-colored facade of the Königshof, formerly home to Kaufhof and Galeria, gleams.
