Berlin – Against the backdrop of the power outage on the Iberian Peninsula, Green Party leader Felix Banaszak is calling on the incoming government to act swiftly to protect the power grids. "Even if the reasons for the nationwide power outage in Spain are still unclear, the incident should serve as a warning," Banaszak told the newspapers of the Funke media group (Wednesday editions). The security of the power grids is essential for a modern society. "If traffic collapses and communication is no longer possible, this can have dramatic consequences. The incoming federal government must urgently take precautions to ensure greater security." The outgoing government had introduced a KRITIS umbrella law to protect critical infrastructure against outages and attacks, but it was not passed. Banaszak accuses the CDU/CSU of having "blocked" the law. The Green Party leader called for simultaneous investments in civil protection and preparedness to be better prepared in the event of an emergency. "The prospective coalition has additional scope for this thanks to the special fund, which must now be used," Banaszak told the Funke newspapers.
